Multianalytical Assessment of Armour Paints—The Ageing Characteristics of Historic Drying Oil Varnish Paints for Protection of Steel and Iron Surfaces in Sweden

The characteristics of armour paints, historically used to protect ferrous industrial heritage, are explored. Amour paints contain lamellar and highly reflexive pigments micaceous iron oxide (MIO) metallic, leafing aluminium, bound in linseed oil oil–tung mixtures, on an inhibitive soap-forming primer (red lead). It is the first study binding media for historical investigates chemical physical ageing using a multianalytical approach. Naturally aged examples compared accelerated replica paint, paints. degradation reactions assessed by complementary GC–MS FTIR, together with measurements wettability, hardness surface colour. paint formulations include oils alkyd binders. results confirm that effect aluminium only small concentration binder at surface: studied reflect light form strong barrier. Linseed tung mixtures have been proven be suitable production but evaluation assessment changes will require further investigation.
